Featured

So this is the section of the page devoted to stuff like cool local bands (and by local I don't mean local to FL but small unsigned bands throughout the country), cds that have to be heard, cool people and other random things that are worth mentioning. So please check it out! And if you know of someone that should be featured on here let me know!!

March/April 2010

Ok So I kinda slacked off in March but I'm making it up by bringing you two featured bands in April. And guess what? They're BOTH local bands! YAY!

Setting Sail

Picture

I don't know much about these guys as there isn't a whole lot of info on their myspace page. I just know that they're a ska band from Ft. Lauderdale and that their music is absolutely adorable! They've played places like Solid Sound Studios, The Talent Farm, The Mill, and Revolution. Here's a couple videos I found of them playing at Revolution. You can't see them too well but they sound great! Hopefully I'll get the chance to see them play a show. Gotta keep my eyes and ears peeled for Setting Sail. If you wanna hear more of their tunes check out their myspace page.

King Rooster

King Rooster is another ska band from Ft. Lauderdale but they have a different sound. Its a harder heavier but no less fun ska. They remind me of Voodoo Glowskulls or Mustard Plug. Check out their myspace page for more songs. But in the meantime here's a video

Bedouin Soudclash - Walls Fall Down

Picture
Ok I gotta blame my husband for this one. He listens to music in the shower and every time I heard this song play I would listen to it and swoon. Its just sooooo pretty. The song is called Walls Fall Down and while there are some ska elements in it, I wouldn't really consider it a ska song. Their myspace lists them as Reggae/Dub/Soul but its def got that Jack Johnson/Jason Mraz feel to it. What do you think?

Bedoin Soundclash is a Reggae/Dub/Soul band from Toronto. While their style isn't typical of these genres, there's no doubt they make beautiful music. Check them out on myspace to hear more of their music.

Song of the week! : THE DRASTICS - I want you back

Picture
Ok so I'm late with this one. You know me, I'm always the last one to discover things.  I first heard it on the Monumental Tracks  podcast then I recently heard it again on the Pressure Drop Soundcast and remembered how much I loved this song!! This group from Chicago called The Drastics released a cd of Michael Jackson songs with reggae/dub music underneath original voice tracks as a tribute to the fallen king of pop. The first song on the cd is I Want You Back and its sooo good! Its the only Jackson Five song on the cd though. The rest are older MJ hits. Unfortunately I don't feel any of the other songs and I don't think the mix works too well on them. I think this song is the best one on the disc and the only one I like.  But if you're an MJ fan you may like the others. They're certainly worth checking out. You can download the album for free here.

December 2009
-  Our very first Featured band is....

                                         Maxwell Smart

Picture
MAXWELL SMART is a ska band from the San Fernando Valley in California. According to their myspace bio, they've been making their version of ska since 2007.  That version just happens to be delicious. Front man Brandon writes catchy tunes and has a voice you just want more of,  while the horn section will hit notes that will melt your face. Two things I love are horns and harmonies and Maxwell Smart delivers on both counts.  They've played with bands like The Roundabouts, Nino Zombie, and Rude Devilles. To listen to their songs go to their myspace page.  Make sure you listen to my two favs "Why You Gotta" and "Waiting".

If any of you readers are in the Southern California area make sure you catch one of their shows. And if you want them to play a show near you, go to their myspace page and let them know! And if you want them to come to Miami, scroll down and click on the DEMAND IT button.  I've already demanded they come to Miami and you should too!

Remember cool local bands like this need all the support they can get to be successful!
And if you really wanna help out, they do accept donations. ;)

Here's their music video for the song "Zombies"

I thought it was sooo cool that some high school kids covered one of their songs. Check it:
